‘Messing Around’ in the kitchen with Colman’s

My dad literally loves to mess around in the kitchen. I tell him he should be on the Food Network show Chopped because he’s great at creating amazing recipes on the fly out of random things in the house or when he’s planning on making one thing and is missing ingredients and has to make due with what he has. He can literally just throw together amazing dishes without a recipe or a game plan and they always come out absolutely fabulous. It blows my mind.

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I constantly spam my dad’s food all over Instagram Stories. He tries to claim he’s not a chef but honestly he missed his calling. As I’ve gotten older and expanded my palette, I’ve grown to truly appreciate his gift for creating fantastic meals. One of my favorite things to do is cook with him, (more accurately, taking a hundred pictures to try and document every step) and of course attempting to jot down the exact recipe in hopes of one day being able to try and replicate his marvelous masterpieces. I should mention my dad never measures anything making this nearly an impossible task unless you count him saying “a bit of this” and a “skosh of that”.

Last night we decided to “mess around” in the kitchen with Colman’s and came up with two different recipes featuring Colman’s Mustard Prepared and Colman’s Dry Mustard Powder and though both can be enjoyed separately, they actually compliment each other quite well! The HOT Honey Mustard Sauce adds a pop of color to the plate while the tarragon and lemon zest add a fresh element. The crusted chicken are a nice texture and all together, well- it’s one beautiful and tasty mouthful!


Colman’s Mustard is hot! Not temperature hot but nose hot, similar to wasabi or horseradish. During this collaboration, I learned Colman’s isn’t just a condiment, but a very versatile ingredient that can be used in many dishes, in all sorts of ways! Both Colman’s Dry and Prepared Mustards can be used creatively to add some heat and flavor to your everyday meals.



HOT Honey Mustard Sauce

This sauce turned out ahh-mazing! It’s the kind of sauce where it’s so good, you feel like you could enjoy it on ANYTHING! It makes a great dipping sauce for homemade chicken tenders.

Serves: 2-4 people


  • Colman’s Mustard Prepared
  • Low-fat mayonnaise
  • Honey
  • 1 lemon

How to Make:

In a measuring cup, add:

Whisk together, ready to serve.



HOT Basmati Rice

This rice has a unique flavor and is best enjoyed with homemade chicken tenders and your Hot Honey Mustard Sauce! 


Serves: 2-4 people


  • Colman’s Dry Mustard Powder
  • Basmati Rice
  • Chicken Broth
  • 1 Can Diced or Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 Yellow zucchini
  • 1 shallot
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 lemon
  • Pepper
  • Fresh tarragon

Prep Work:

  • Zest 1 lemon
  • Chop fresh tarragon
  • Set aside for later

How to Make:

Dice 1 shallot. Caramelize in a small pan.

In a medium sauce pan, add:

  • 1 cup Brown Basmati rice
  • 1 tbsp. Colman’s Dry Mustard Powder
  • 1/2 of one yellow zucchini
  • 1/3 cup chicken broth
  • Diced zucchini
  • Caramelized shallot
  • 1/2 can of diced or chopped tomatoes
  • Pepper to taste

Stir everything together. Cook for 35-40 minutes.

When the rice has about 3 minutes left, add 1 clove of minced garlic. After rice is cooked, add 1 tbsp. of lemon juice (or to taste).

Top with fresh tarragon and lemon zest.














Homemade Chicken Tenders

I love making these at home because they’re pretty easy to make and are always super delicious! Especially over a bed of HOT Basmati Rice and topped with HOT Honey Mustard Sauce.


Serves: 2-4 people


  • 1-2 lbs. of boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • Whole Milk
  • 1 egg
  • Rosemary Sourdough bread

How to Make:

In a food processor, use Rosemary Sourdough bread to make homemade breadcrumbs.

Cut chicken into strips 3/8” thick.

In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup whole milk and 1 egg. In a separate bowl, add homemade breadcrumbs.

Dip chicken first into egg + milk mixture then in breadcrumbs.

Over medium low heat (make suer oil is hot) add 1/8” Spectrum High Oleic peanut oil.

Brown chicken strips evenly on both sides until fully cooked.

Enjoy with HOT Basmati Rice and HOT Honey Mustard Sauce.










This was actually my first time using Colman’s! I’m not a mustard on my hotdog kind of girl, but I love using honey mustard in chicken marinates and coating fish when I bake it in the oven. I also enjoy things with a kick like horseradish so I was really excited to give Colman’s a try!

PS can I just say how ADORABLE this apron is?!! Not gonna like, I was most excited about this!!
